Indicator Based surveillance (IBS)
Zambia is strengthening public health security through the IDSR strategy, which leverages both Indicator-Based Surveillance (IBS) and event-based surveillance (EBS) approaches.
For IBS, over 4,000 public health facilities providing universal health coverage, including health security services, report case-based and aggregate surveillance data to 116 districts. This information is then collated into 10 provinces and consolidated at the Surveillance and Disease Intelligence Unit at the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI).
To promote timely action, ZNPHI shares critical information with stakeholders through:
- Weekly National Epidemiological Bulletin
- Case-based Outbreak Situation Reports
- Event Spot Reports
This enables prompt action to:
- Promote public health
- Prevent disease outbreaks
- Respond to health emergencies
- Restore public health services
By enhancing surveillance and response capabilities, Zambia is better equipped to protect the health and well-being of its citizens.
